Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
I heard the cutest story about a child and lullabies the other day. Their mom had always sung “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to them when it was time to go to sleep. At naptime or at bedtime this was the song of choice so the child began to associate “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” with going to sleep. Later, they suddenly began to cry at church one day when a teacher suggested they sing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” because she thought it meant they’d have to go to sleep.
That’s a cute story and it truly illustrates the power of lullabies in a child’s life. THey really can be soothing, calming and a wonderful way to get your little ones to fall asleep. SInging lullabies seems to be part of tradition as well. A lullaby song gets passed down from one generation to the next and becomes “popular” amongst a particular family and known as the “lullaby” song.

Bedtime Blues Begone
We all think of lullabies when we think of tiny babies freshly home from the hospital, but what about toddlers and preschoolers too. Wouldn’t they enjoy some bedtime lullabies. Sure they would! Actually, I’ve found this nighttime ritual to help my kids sleep so much better, and fall asleep faster. What could be better than that?
I know for us bedtime can often be a struggle, but with a set bedtime routine of baths, stories, a goodnight prayer and kiss, and lullabies they surely fall asleep alot faster than before. No more struggling to get them in their jammies and in their beds. What a relief!
Then, I can sing myself my own lullaby or grab some snuggle time on the couch with hubby. Whatever the case, at least I’m not singing the bedtime blues anymore.

I’ve done a lot of rocking lately. Having a new baby you spend quite a bit of time rocking, singing, burping, you know the drill. Babies from as early as in the womb have a love of music. They respond to music and it is good for them to listen to.

Personally I know when I have a bad day music can help me release some of the tension. Since it effects us this much as adults, don’t you think it would have the same benefit for kids? I believe this is why lullabies for bedtime and rhythm music for play time is so important for kids. It has the effect of calming them down or teaching them through music. Newborn Babies and Music
My first born child has always struggled with patience. Even when he was born, he was two months early. My little 3 lb baby was in the hospital for over a month so I spent many days up in ICU. When you have a tiny baby like that, the environment really makes a difference. It is easy to see when the baby becomes stressed or when they are peacefully resting, especially with all the monitors around them.
I noticed that music in the ICU helped sooth agitated babies. Before I could even hold him we played him lullabies. When he was particularly upset the nurse would turn the soothing music on and it would help to calm him down. I know newborn babies don’t understand they name yet, but what a neat idea to have a personalized CD singing some sweet lullabies to them personally. They would begin to learn their name and the music can be something you can use at home to help calm them down.
