That’s Mine!
One of the first things toddlers learn is the word, “mine.” They would like to think that everything they pick up is theirs. During this phase the kids are learning about social skills and sharing. To expect toddlers to be happy about sharing is a little far-fetched. Parents need to have realistic expectations during this time. One of the ways parents can teach kids to share is by modeling it themselves. It is a difficult phase to get through.
On the other hand, not everything should be a battle during this phase and by allowing them certain things that are theirs gives them as sense of security. For example a personalized mug with their name on it. Every day for dinner or lunch they are allow to use their own mug, with their name on it. This allows parents to teach them what areas we share and what is theirs. Also toddlers learn to recognize the letters in their name. So even though teaching a toddler to share is one of the many important —yet difficult— stages, sometimes it is nice to have an area where you know there won’t be a battle.
